McAfee, Inc. has unveiled the debut issue of The Global Threat Report, a semi-annual security journal designed to update and inform technical personnel and security executives about cutting-edge security topics, to help them make better security decisions.

The premier issue of The Global Threat Report includes feature articles, op-eds and in-depth technical pieces by respected industry experts discussing compelling security topics, including the role of financial incentives in malware, the widespread adoption of open source philosophy and practices in malware development, and the effects of increasingly professional-grade malware.

The premier edition of the publication features analyses of many facets of open source, specifically:

  • Good Intentions Gone Awry: A look at how open source principles, as practiced in the malware-writing community, has affected the evolution of threats.
  • Money Changes Everything: How financial incentives and open source practices have changed the character and quality of malware and its development.
  • Building Better Bots: An examination of the impact that professional development methodologies are having on this particular type of malware and the implications and issues associated with their use.

Opinion editorials examine the widely debated issues surrounding vulnerability discovery, disclosure, and bounties. Additionally, technical articles on the role of open source in Windows rootkit development and Apple's Macintosh OS X operating system can be found in the issue.
