Winternals Opens Beta Program to IT Professionals
12 Jun 05:08

Winternals Software has announced a call for Protection Manager 2.0 beta testers. The beta program is open to qualified Windows professionals in midmarket and enterprise organizations with Microsoft Windows infrastructure and security management responsibilities.

Protection Manager is a Windows enterprise security solution that prevents malicious applications from executing and also provides administrators with granular control of user and application privilege levels. Rather than stopping only known vulnerabilities, as conventional antivirus and anti-spyware solutions do, Protection Manager proactively intercepts all applications and then allows only those specifically authorized to run, while optionally adjusting application security privileges. Protection Manager minimizes the risk of security breaches by preventing the execution of unknown applications, helping enforce security policies, and thwarting attacks that depend on Administrator-level privileges.

The forthcoming Protection Manager 2.0 will add significant new capabilities to enhance Protection Manager's multi-tiered defense against malicious software attacks and other harmful applications, while simultaneously bringing powerful new privilege features that make running as a Limited User on Windows even easier than 1.0. Version 2.0 will feature the industry-unique ability for local Users (or Administrators with reduced Internet Explorer privileges) to install administrator-trusted ActiveX controls. Protection Manager will be the first product capable of allowing Users to install and run trusted Active X controls, using a patent-pending installation method.

New features in Protection Manager 2.0 that beta testers can evaluate include:

  • Support for blocking CPL (Windows Control Panel applet) execution, including the optional ability to selectively elevate or reduce their privileges
  • The ability to selectively elevate or reduce privileges of MSI or other Windows application installers (optionally including child processes)
  • The ability to view a client application usage history in order to more efficiently manage operation of the product and diagnose problem applications.
