PDF documents as a plattform independent file format for printable documents are omnipresent in companies and a suitable format for publication and selling of content. With the latest version of "SmartShelter PDF" 5.0, Wibu-Systems AG offers authors of digital content a secure protection mechanism based on the known hardware version of CodeMeter.

The SmartShelter plug-in creates the new menu item "Save encrypted document" in the task bar of Adobe Acrobat. Within a few minutes the protection is integrated. The requirements are the CodeMeter Development Kit and Adobe Acrobat Professional version 6.0 or 7.0. After specifing the required Acrobat version and the authorisation for printing, modifying and copying, the encryption process starts. Using Product Code number sequences it is possible to define the varying authorisations for defined person groups in a comfortable way. One step batch processing is available to protect several documents in one go.

To use a protected document the reader just needs the USB hardware CM-Stick that was programmed by the author, and Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6.0 or 7.0 with the CodeMeter plug-in. After connecting the programmed CodeMeter hardware the encrypted document can be opened and read.
