Finjan, a provider of web security solutions, has announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted it U.S. Patent No. 7,058,822 for "Malicious Mobile Code Runtime Monitoring System and Methods".
The patent covers systems and methods for protecting end user machines from undesirable or otherwise malicious operations performed by mobile code, including Java applets, ActiveX controls, JavaScript, Visual Basic scripts, add-ins, downloaded/uploaded programs or other "downloadables". These technologies, known as "Active Content", are used to provide dynamic and enriched content on websites and to run common business applications. However, they can also be exploited by hackers to surreptitiously install Spyware, Trojans and other malicious content on user machines.
[Again a reason why the EU should completely reject software patents - these patents are damaging to computer users world wide and should not be granted. --Ed].
