American Power Conversion Announces Critical Update
22 Aug 08:53

American Power Conversion has announced that customers using older versions of its PowerChute Business Edition software must immediately upgrade, if they have not already done so, to ensure continued availability of servers on which the software is installed, as previously advised by APC's web site and email communications efforts.

"Executives receiving this message are asked to communicate it throughout their information technology organisations," said Rob Johnson, vice president and general manager of APC's Availability Enhancement Group. "We have made this upgrade available for free on our web site."

On July 27, 2005, a component library bundled with PowerChute Business Edition Versions 6.0.0 through Version 6.2.2 expired, rendering the software inoperative the next time it loads. Windows Servers with the affected versions installed may hang when the PowerChute process loads at reboot time. PowerChute Personal Edition, PowerChute Network Shutdown, PowerChute Plus, and PowerChute Business Edition Version 7.x users are unaffected by this issue. Customers with the affected versions of software must immediately upgrade to the latest version of PowerChute Business Edition v7.0.4 or PowerChute Business Edition v7.0.2 (for Windows NT).

[That such an important component of a system should simply 'expire' is beyond belief. This kind of information constitutes important input to risk evaluation processes in connection with choosing products! --Ed.]
