BT it has acquired Counterpane Internet Security Inc., a provider of managed networked security services, best known for having Bruce Schneier as their founder and CTO.

Counterpane currently monitors 550 networks worldwide for multinational and Fortune 100 customers. The company is based in Mountain View, California. Post-acquisition, Bruce Schneier will continue in his role as CTO and Paul Stich will remain its CEO.

As at 31 December 2004 the audited gross assets of the business were 6.8m. Further details have not been disclosed.

[This sounds very much like a win/win situation. Counterpane is a small company with what is rumored to be excellent technology, and BT has the muscle to market Counterpane's services to a wider customer base. Due to the presence of Bruce Schneier this acquisition will reflect positively on BT as a serious player in the security field.
