Icelandic Storage Service Provider SecurStore Opens UK Office to Deliver Offsite Managed Backup and Recovery to SMBs.

SecurStore, Icelands leading storage services provider, has launched into the UK backup/recovery market for small to medium business (SMBs). SecurStore currently backs up data from its Reykjavik data centre for businesses in ten countries spanning four continents and is opening a UK office and data centre to concentrate on developing its presence in a leading European market for the storage industry.

UK customers will have secure and reliable data backup, faster recovery from disk-to-disk than from tape, and the extra security of offsite backup and recovery. Unlike most other backup service providers, SecurStore also ensures that the data from every office location, no matter how remote, is also backed up to the data centre. Remote workers and laptop users connected to the network can also be incorporated in the back up. There are market studies indicating that between 70-80 per cent of multi-site companies data resides in remote offices, outside the four walls of their data centre. This data can be just as critical as the data generated from the head office. SecurStore is geared specifically to help businesses properly manage and protect their entire network of data from one centralised location. This means that one person can manage the backup of data generated at the remote sites from a centralised location.

The service is priced per gigabyte stored at the SecurStore data centre. As the amount of data increases, the price per gigabyte decreases. The agentless architecture embedded in the SecurStore service means that customers are only charged per compressed amount of data backed up, and not on a per-user basis.

The agentless structure of SecurStores solution enables SecurStore to offer a scalable service, with customers paying for the amount of data stored and not for each machine backed up. Because the solution is agentless customers save on buying new hardware. The automated backup eliminates the potential risk with human intervention and reduces labour costs. SMBs of all sizes can ensure business-continuity as lost data can be restored in minutes as all data is online on disk subsystems.

The backed up data is transferred offsite in real-time, removing the risk of having backups located onsite in case of a disaster or data loss during transportation. High-level encryption protects the data during transmission and storage, eliminating risk of unauthorised access. In addition, SecurStore managed services has security features such as strong authentication, data encryption, password protection and client and system side logging, giving total confidentiality of the backed up data. Encrypted data is held offsite in a state of the art Data Centre on a reliable disk subsystem, which is in turn duplicated and backed up onto a second disk sub-system, located away from the primary disk sub-system.

At the customers site, a single DS-Client discovers all servers, desktops and laptops connected to the local network, and automates the backup of all local data assets. Agents are not installed on machines being backed up. Before the backup data set is transmitted to SecurStores data centre, the DS-client analyses the data, finds new and changed file blocks, eliminates duplicate files and further compresses the residue bytes to ensure the backup set is as compact as possible. The software then encrypts the data before sending it over an IP-WAN connection to a centralised DS-System server in SecurStores data centre, which consolidates the backup data from all distributed sites. Data is encrypted in-flight and at-rest. That DS-System server is then protected just like any other server within the data centre as part of the organisations ongoing data protection policies. As an additional level of data protection, SecurStore has configured the DS-System server to replicate the vault to a second secure back up site.

SecurStore is suitable for businesses that need to protect data from a few gigabytes to terabytes and supports many platforms including Windows NT/2000/2003/XP along with AS-400 iSeries, Unix and Linux. SecurStore can also protect a wide range of databases including Oracle, SQL, Exchange, Lotus Notes and DB2.

SecurStore was established in 1991, and for over a decade offered extensive knowledge and expertise of IT solutions and services. In 2004, SecurStore decided to focus solely on its professional online backup service, which meets the requirements of small and medium businesses in terms of cost, security, automation and fast and reliable recovery.
