A group of seven MSc Information Security students have become Royal Holloway, University of Londons first e-learning graduates leading the way for distance learning in an ever changing market place.

Carl Li, 31, from Hong Kong was the first to attend a graduation ceremony held at the Barbican in central London. He was one of only two students to graduate with distinction. Carl worked full time for Wing Lung Bank in Hong Kong as an Information Security Specialist, whilst studying for his MSc.

Carl took two years to complete the course. I chose this MSc because the course content focused more on the theory aspects rather than the vocational, explains Carl. The course is particularly appropriate for working individuals as the format allows part-time study regardless of location and job demands. A great deal of what I learnt is applicable to my work and it is great to visit Royal Holloway for the first time, added Carl.

The Information Security Group (ISG) at Royal Holloway offers the distance (online) learning version of the MSc in Information Security through the University of London External Programme which commenced in October 2003. This innovative course offers students a chance to study in a flexible way to fit round their work commitments.

Hilary Ganley, course director for the online MSc said: We have 160 students from around the world enrolled on our course and an online community engaged in seminars and discussions to support their studies. After getting to know Carl through this online environment it was great to finally meet him and his family for this special occasion.

The ISG is one of the foremost academic security groups in the world bringing together expertise in education, research and practice in the field of information security.
