KPMG has announced that Alan Downey, Government Advisory partner, is to take on the role of Chief Operating Officer for the firms Risk Advisory Services practice.
Alan, who originally joined KPMGs public sector consulting arm in 1989, takes over from James Conway who has successfully combined the COO role for Audit and Advisory since 2004. At that time, RAS was a 90 million business which overlapped heavily with Audit RAS is now approximately twice that size, with 1,400 members of staff across the UK.
Alan has a track record of operational management in consulting and advisory businesses, both in KPMG Consulting, then Atos Origin UK and, following his return to KPMG in 2004, as head of KPMGs Government Advisory practice. He was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and then at Cambridge University, before becoming a fast-stream civil servant at Department of the Environment. His time in Government included spells as Private Secretary to Ministers for Local Government Kenneth Baker and William Waldegrave.
