McAfee has announced the results of the most prevalent threats for August 2006. This is a monthly tracker of the leading threats that are infecting computers across Europe and each threat has been detailed below:

Type of Threat: Trojan
Threat aimed at: JS/Wonka may be used as a means to load other malicious scripts and exploit trojans. Indications of infection vary.

Name of Threat: Exploit-WMF
Type of Threat: Trojan
Threat aimed at: This detection covers WMF files attempting to exploit a Windows vulnerability. This can result in arbitrary code execution meaning that any number of events may subsequently take place on a compromised system.

PC's Infected: 4.0 per cent
Name of Threat: Exploit-ByteVerify
Type of Threat: Trojan
Threat aimed at: This detection covers Java applets that attempt to exploit the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-011 vulnerability. This severity of this vulnerability is considered to be critical. It allows an attacker to execute malicious code, simply by visiting an infectious website. Detections of this exploit do not necessarily mean that any malicious code was executed. It simply means that a Java applet was found to contain the exploit code. Conversely malicious code may have been run, which could result in any number of modifications to the system.
